About the event
Tea and cacao are both travellers across oceans. Tea travelled to Taiwan, while cacao travelled to the Pacific and became part of Samoan life and agriculture.
Through a tasting of Taiwanese tea alongside Samoan chocolate, we discover how travellers — plants and people alike — become part of a place, a people, and a culture.
Along the way, we explore the journeys of peoples, cultural inheritance, belonging, and the complexities of arriving somewhere new. From the Austronesian connections between Taiwan and the Pacific, to our connections to communities whose histories predate modern Singapore, we navigate what it means to carry culture across oceans — and how we might learn to belong without forgetting who was here before us.
Eschewing the familiar question of how tea and chocolate might be paired, we look instead into what they might reveal. Taiwanese tea and Samoan chocolate become sensory anchors for stories and questions…
